Mediterranean, varied and versatile, the island fascinates perhaps also because of its contrasts. The charm of contrasts
Mallorca is home to almost 900,000 inhabitants, almost half of whom live in the capital Palma alone. The individual regions of the Balearic island could hardly be more different. The rough north, the lively east, the gentle south and the quiet west as well as the rural plains in the center of the island: Each region in itself makes vacationing in Mallorca worthwhile.
The road network in Mallorca is very well developed and about 1200 kilometers long. The longest distance from west to east is 96 kilometers and from north to south 76 kilometers. No matter where you are on the island, no place on Mallorca is further than 40 kilometers from the sea. Due to the good infrastructure paired with short distances at any time, day trips are not only interesting for everyone, but make them especially pleasant during your vacation on Mallorca.
The island is almost 3500 square kilometers, enchants with varied scenery and a coastline length of 581 km. Two mountain ranges, one in the east and one in the northwest, characterize the landscape there. The Tramuntana mountains in the northwest, the Sierra del Norte, have more than 40 peaks over 1000 meters high and are popular with ambitious cyclists. The highest peak is the Puig Mayor with 1445 meters.
The east of Mallorca is characterized by a fjord-like coastline, in whose hinterland the Sierra de Levant rises between Santanyi and Cala Ratjada, which is popular with vacationers. In the southeast, the two bays of Pollenca and Alcudia are separated by the high rising peninsula of La Victoria.
Fascination Mallorca - a "sea" of diversity
Charming landscapes that turn into magical looking and lively scenery during the almond blossom season, wine-growing areas and almond plantations, fantastic natural harbors, wide sandy beaches and a "sea" of culture and sights - Mallorca offers all this.
The island's capital Palma de Mallorca is characterized by historical cultural assets and sights. With its many monuments, churches and galleries, as well as the Gothic cathedral La Seu, the medieval castle Castell de Bellver and the pretty old town, Palma is a city to marvel at. But also away from the capital, the Balearic island captivates with impressive sights. The Roman ruins of Pollentia, the port of Cala Figuera or the longest underwater cave in Europe located in the east are worth a visit alone.
In the northwest of the island, in the midst of the imposing Tramuntana mountains are some popular with holidaymakers destinations. These include Sollér, Valldemosa, Fornalutx as well as the monastery of Lluc. Also the Sa Calobra gorge is always an impressive scenic spectacle.
In Mallorca's east, for example, the former fishing village of Porto Cristo with its beautiful bays invites you to stroll and relax. The dragon caves near Porto Cristo are also fascinating with their bizarre images and shapes. In Manacor you can learn how the famous Majoricas art beads are made or visit the natural harbor bay Cala de Manacor.
The center of the island is not only one of the most original regions of Mallorca, but is also full of history, myths and legends. To this day, Roman, Moorish and Christian influences are evident throughout the area. The landscape is characterized by traditional agriculture and cattle breeding, vineyards, olive groves and countless almond trees. The fortress of Alaró, the small town of Sineu with its prehistoric buildings or the small town of Inca, famous for its leather production, are just some of the interesting places in the heart of the island for your vacation in Mallorca.
Along the varied coastline, "La Luminosa" attracts visitors with well over 120 beaches of different kinds. From small, unspoiled natural bays to the almost white and extensive sandy beach "Es Trenc" - there are no wishes left unfulfilled in Mallorca when it comes to beach vacations.
Mallorcan cuisine - Culinarily worth a trip
Of course, the culinary should not be neglected. It does not have to be a gourmet vacation, but you should definitely try the local specialties. Mallorcan cuisine has its very own character. Original Mallorcan cuisine is down-to-earth and hearty. The most famous island specialties are stews, mostly with pork, rabbit or lamb, and the popular vegetable dish tumbet. As a rule, only ingredients that grow and thrive on the island's doorstep are used. Whether freshly caught fish, excellent tapas or a Mallorcan wine from one of the more than 50 wineries to try - Mallorca is also culinary diverse and unique.
